Panvidea Announces WebM Support

Posted by doug_heise | Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Panvidea Supports WebM Open Media Project

Panvidea Supports Enhanced VP8 Codec Support as Part of its Instantly Scalable Cloud Video Encoding and Distribution Service

New York – 26th August 2010 – Panvidea™, a global leader in on-demand video encoding, preparation, processing and distribution for entertainment and advertising content across any digital platform, has today announced broad and comprehensive support for Google’s new WebM project, along with Adobe, Microsoft, and more than forty other publishers, software and hardware vendors. The new WebM open web media format, based on the VP8 open source video codec, is immediately available to all users of Panvidea’s cloud based video encoding and processing service at no additional charge as part of the company’s already extensive list of the highest quality video and audio codecs and containers.

WebM is an open, royalty-free media file format designed specifically for online video distribution. WebM files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec developed by On2 Technologies, a leading video compression firm acquired by Google in 2009.

The VP8 codec delivers high-quality video while efficiently adapting to varying processing and bandwidth conditions across a broad range of devices. It is highly bandwidth efficient and has low storage requirements, making it attractive for publishers looking to reduce costs and expand licensing opportunities for their content. The format strives for simplicity, making it easy to integrate into existing environments and easy to fine tune for the highest possible output quality.

WebM is designed to be a free alternative to the proprietary formats that dominate video on the web today – especially H.264. WebM is 100% free, and open-sourced under a BSD-style license. The introduction of the royalty-free WebM format has already had a significant impact on the online content market. As more companies – including most of the major web browsers – embrace the format, the owners of other formats are increasing starting to embrace open standards as well. One recent example is MPEG LA’s recent decision to offer a royalty-free license for the popular H.264 video codec for video sites that offer free video streams to consumers.

“We are very excited to be able to announce our support for the WebM initiative,” said Chris Cali, co-founder and CEO of Panvidea. “As online video becomes more pervasive and more professional, developers need to be able to select from a wide variety of high quality formats – both open source and proprietary.  We believe that the WebM project, with its emphasis on openness and will make it even easier for publishers of all shapes and sizes to distribute video content of the highest possible quality. We think that’s a good thing for the industry and we are pleased to be able to offer WebM video encoding to our customers.”

Panvidea already provides comprehensive support with full codec parameter control for all major TV, VoD, web & mobile formats. Panvidea’s built-in intelligence and instantly scalable cloud video encoding engine automatically determines the best way to produce the highest quality results in the fastest possible time.

“Panvidea leads the industry with regard to scalability, cost efficiency, batch processing capabilities, and workflow automation for professional content owners,” said Cali. “Adding support for Google’s WebM format only adds to the strengths of our service offering.”

Introducing Panvidea 2.3.0

Posted by doug_heise | Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Panvidea Releases New Version of Industry Leading Video Processing Engine

New Version Provides Enhanced Ease of Use and More Powerful Processing Filters

New York – 27th July 2010 – Panvidea™, a global leader in the on-demand video preparation, processing and distribution of entertainment and advertising content across any digital platform, is pleased to announce the release of Panvidea v2.3.0, the latest iteration of its industry-leading cloud-based video encoding and post production platform. This new release provides a range of significant new features designed to provide greatly enhanced usability, flexibility, and power.

New product features and functionality include:

  • Black Frame and Splicing filters now support grouping to reference timecode of source file when applying multiple duration augmenting operations
  • Secure ingest directly from the Dashboard via SSL
  • Advanced profile and job status search in the Dashboard
  • Updated format setup dialog
  • Enhanced job details dialog
  • Double-click to edit rows vs. single click

Let’s examine each of these a little more closely.

Grouping to Reference Timecode for Black Frames and Splice Filters

Previous versions of Panvidea allowed you to apply video splices or insert any number of black frames at the head or tail of a video. However, you could not insert interstitial black frames for uses such as commercial black Sometimes multiple interstitial “pods” must be inserted into a single video. Furthermore, one could not apply multiple splice filters to a single source file to produce multiple output versions.

The new version of Panvidea removes these limitations by allowing you to apply these filters in groups that reference different points referencing a source video’s timeline.

Grouping works slightly differently for the Black Frame and Splice filters, however, so it’s worth looking at each individually:

  • Panvidea v2.3.0 allows you to group black frame filters within a profile in order to produce a single output file with multiple groups, or pods, of black frames inserted at various points within a source video’s timecode. Black frames can now be added to the head, tail, or interstitially easily by not having to make time calculations based on the results of the previous filter.
  • Panvidea v2.3.0 also allows you to group splice filters to create multiple output files with different bits of videos spliced onto the head and/or tail of the source file. Panvidea supports splices at the head and tail of the source video only. Interstitial splicing has long been supported, however, as part of the “Insert” filter.

Secure Ingest Directly from the Dashboard

Panvidea now allows users to select a video directly from your file system and upload to one or more predefined profiles using secure HTTP. Although this approach is not recommended for uploading large files, it does provide a quick and simple ingest method for smaller files or for users looking for an easy way to submit a test file.

Here is what the new ingest screen looks like:

Advanced Profile and Job Status Search in the Dashboard

Finding the right format, job, file, or user just got a lot easier with Panvidea v2.3.0. Our new advanced search features allows you to define specific search criteria for all system categories within Panvidea. You can set specific date parameters, search for users by name or email address, quickly check the status of recent processing jobs, search for specific codecs or wrappers, and much, much more.

Updated Format Setup Dialog

Panvidea’s format setup screen is now easier to use than ever before with clear on-screen instructions and a simple drag-and-drop interface.

Enhanced Job Details Dialog

Panvidea v2.3.0 puts a wealth of detailed job information at customer’s fingertips with its new enhanced job details dialog screen. This new view assembles all critical job data – including name, size, transcode status, and delivery status – on a single screen. It also provides specific time durations for all phases of a job.

Double-Click to Edit Rows vs. Single Click

Finally, we’ve made it more intuitive to edit items in any table or list with a double click rather than a single click. And we’ve added a familiar progress wheel animation so that you always know when the system is processing your inputs.
